Hi Traders,
Let’s chat about market psychology – it’s basically about why people act a bit daft when it comes to money and trading.
The Stock Market: It’s a Bit of a Mess, Really
Think of the stock market like a busy pub on a Friday night. Sometimes it’s all nice and orderly, other times it’s a right mess. That’s market psychology for you.
Fear and Greed: The Big Two
These are the main things that make people go a bit wonky when trading:
- Greed: “Ooh, look at that stock going up. I’ll have some of that!”
- Fear: “Blimey, my shares are down. Better sell before I lose the lot!”
FOMO: Not Wanting to Miss Out
It’s like when everyone’s talking about a new telly show, and you feel left out. In trading, it makes people jump on bandwagons without really thinking.
Following the Crowd
People tend to do what everyone else is doing. In the market, this can cause prices to go mental, up or down.
Burying Your Head in the Sand
When things go bad, some folks just ignore it. Like pretending your bank statement doesn’t exist when you’ve overspent.
Only Seeing What You Want to See
We all like being right, don’t we? So sometimes we only pay attention to stuff that says we made a good choice, even if we didn’t.
Thinking You’re Cleverer Than You Are
Some people make one good trade and think they’re a genius. It usually doesn’t end well.
Sticking to Old Numbers
People often get stuck on old prices, like thinking your house is still worth what it was five years ago.
Hating to Lose
We really don’t like losing money. Sometimes this makes us hold onto rubbish investments for too long.
Getting Too Cocky
Being too sure of yourself in trading is like thinking you can drink ten pints and still walk straight. It rarely works out.
So, What’s the Point?
Understanding all this stuff can help you not make silly mistakes when you’re trading. Remember:
- The market can be as unpredictable as the weather.
- Your brain can play tricks on you.
- It’s good to know when you might be being a bit daft.
Before you trade, have a think: “Am I being sensible here, or am I just doing what everyone else is doing?”
Trading isn’t a get-rich-quick thing. Take your time, be careful, and try not to let your emotions get the better of you.
Good luck with your trading, Stick to your plan & stay safe.
