The Importance of Developing a Trading Plan and Sticking to It

Alright, traders! We’re about to dive into the wild world of trading plans. Yeah, I know, it sounds about as exciting as watching paint dry, but trust me, this is the secret to not blowing  your account faster than you can say “Sxxt.”

Picture this: You’re at the casino, you’ve had a few too many free drinks, and you’re feeling lucky. You start throwing chips around like confetti at a wedding. How do you think that’s going to end?

Now, replace “casino” with “trading platform,” and “chips” with your hard-earned cash. Scared yet? That’s exactly what trading without a plan is like. It’s like trying to navigate through a minefield… blindfolded… while juggling… on a bike. You might make it through by some miracle, but let’s be real, you’re probably going to lose.

So, what’s this magical trading plan I keep banging on about?

It’s your roadmap, your holy grail, your “how to not royally screw this up” guide. It’s what keeps you from turning into a degenerate gambler every time you open your trading platform.

Here’s what your trading plan should cover:

Your trading style: Are you a day trader, swing trader.

Your account size.

Risk management: How much are you willing to lose per trade? If your answer is “everything,” go back to step 1 and try again.

Entry and exit strategies: When do you get in? When do you get out? And no, “when I’m rich” is not a valid exit strategy.

The markets you’ll trade: Stocks, forex, crypto, or maybe those obscure Vietnamese goat futures you’ve been looking at.  (You know who you are)

Your trading hours: Because let’s face it, trading in your PJs at 3 AM after a Netflix binge rarely ends well.

Now, here’s the kicker – having a plan is only half the battle. The real challenge is actually sticking to it.

It’s like that diet you started in January. Remember how it went out the window the moment someone mentioned pizza? Yeah, your trading plan can go the same way if you’re not careful.

Why is sticking to your plan so bloody important?

It keeps your emotions in check: Trust me, the market doesn’t care about your feelings. Your plan is your voice of reason when the market is trying to make you its emotional punching bag.

It helps you stay consistent: Consistency is key in trading. One lucky trade doesn’t make you the Wolf of Wall Street.

It makes you accountable: When things go south (and they will), your plan helps you figure out what went wrong. No more blaming it on Mercury being in retrograde.

It prevents overtrading: Without a plan, you’re like a kid in a candy store with your parent’s bank card. Your plan keeps you from going on a trading bender.

So, how do you actually stick to this plan?

Write it down: Not on a napkin or the back of your hand. Actually write it down, print it out, laminate it if you have to.

Review it regularly: Make it your bedtime story. Read it every morning with your coffee. Heck, make it your phone’s wallpaper if you need to.

Keep a trading journal: Document your trades, your thoughts, your emotions. It’s like therapy, but cheaper.

Be accountable: Tell a friend, join a trading group, or hey, tell your dog if you have to. Just make sure someone (or something) knows your plan.

Remember, a trading plan isn’t set in stone. As you grow and learn, your plan should evolve too. But that doesn’t mean changing it every time you have a losing trade. That’s not evolving, that’s just being flakey.

In the words of Mike Tyson, “Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.” Well, in trading, you’re gonna get punched in the mouth. A lot. Your plan is what helps you get back up, dust yourself off, and keep swinging.

So, what are you waiting for? Go make that plan! Your future self (and your trading account) will thank you.

Keep learning, stay sharp, and for the love of all that is holy, stick to your bloody plan!
